DeepavaliDeepavali (Generally known as Diwali in other parts of India, especially in northern region) is one of the famous festivals in Kerala. The name Deepavali or Diwali means “a row of lights”. The Deepavali celebration is mainly connected to the use of lights in the nights and made the festival to be known as “Festival of Lights”. The Diwali celebration comes as part of the beginning of Hindu calendar. It’s one of the delightful events in Kerala and this kind of events brings attractions to most beautiful places in Kerala.

Every festival has a story to be shared with us; likewise this Diwali Festival is also connected with an epic tale of comeback. The story behind the festival clears you about the victory of good over evil. The demon Narakasura made cruel actions towards the people he rules. He used to toruture the villagers and kidnapped woman to imprison them in his place. He made great disturbances to the village community and as a result of his cruel rule, Lord Krishna came to end his torture and killed him. The day when Narakasura was killed by Lord Krishna is celebrated as Deepavali. It also commemorates the victory of god over devil.

The lights are the main attraction throughout the celebration. People use different kinds of lighting things such as oil lamps, electric lights, etc., to decorate their home, workplace, streets, etc. The scene where lighted objects drift here and there in water filled bowls is so special during Diwali event. The Deepavali festival morning people wake up early morning at around 3 am, which is considered as brahmamuhurtam (most favorable time). Then they took oil bath, following the bath use to wear new clothes. The Hindu community share Deepavali wishes eachother, share sweet food items and also go to temple together to have prayer session.
